Rosin: What It Is and How To Press It at Home Quickly

If you've been looking for a way to access quality rosin without spending a fortune, you may have considered pressing the concentrate at home. If that's the case, then you came to the right place. It's quite easy and inexpensive to make your own quality rosin press at home with a few simple tools and supplies. Even if you've never used a rosin press before, or have very little experience with it, you can be pressing quality rosin at home in no time.

What is rosin?

Rosin is a type of cannabis concentrate that's made by pressing the resin glands (trichomes) from the buds of the plant. The resulting product is an amber-colored, translucent oil that's high in quality and THC content.

Is it possible to make solventless rosin?

When most people think of rosin, they automatically assume it's solventless. However, this isn't always the case because some low-quality rosin is made by using butane or other solvents to extract the oil from your cannabis plant material.
Unfortunately, this means that solvent-based rosin might contain residual solvents and other harmful chemicals. That's why we recommend quality rosin made through a quality press that uses heat and pressure to extract your cannabis resin.

What do you need to make solventless rosin?

If you want to make solventless rosin, here's what you need:

How to press rosin at home

Now that you know what you need to make resin, let's take a look at how to actually go about pressing it.

  1. Preheat your press and place the bud in the rosin bag
You need to get the plates up to the correct temperature before you start pressing, which is between 170 and 220 degrees F.
Trim your cannabis flower and remove any leaves. The buds should be cut into small pieces in order to increase surface area.
Next, add the buds into the rosin bag. Make sure to pack it in tightly, as this will help increase yield. See pre-press moulds.

  2. Put the rosin bag into the press
This step is very straightforward. All you have to do is place the rosin bag in between your quality parchment paper, then apply pressure for around 15-30 seconds (time depends on how hot your plates are). You don't want to apply too much pressure too fast to avoid ending up with an inferior product. Ideally, you should gradually increase the pressure until you reach your desired level (between 300 and 1000 psi).

  3. Remove the rosin bag and let it cool
Once you've pressed your bud, remove the rosin bag and let it cool for a few minutes before inspecting the results. If everything looks good, then go ahead and enjoy! You will know if it's quality rosin if it's transparent and has a golden/amber hue.
Rosin quality is mainly determined by the quality of the cannabis flower you use and the quality of your press. That means that you'll need to invest in good equipment if you want to make the best rosin consistently.
